Complaints about damaged cards to the manufacturers
Complaints about damaged cards to the manufacturers
Here we go over how some of the largest manufacturers usually handle complaints about damaged cards. One important rule applies regardless of the manufacturer: always keep the receipt and original packaging such as the box or package, as this is almost always required for a complaint.
1. Topps (Fanatics)
Topps replaces cards that have so-called factory damage, meaning damage that occurred during production. For a card to be approved, according to their internal assessment, it must be in worse condition than Mint 8.
This is what you need to include in your complaint:
- The damaged card
- Original receipt from the place of purchase
- The UPC code from the box or packaging
- A completed Claim Form from the Topps website
It is important that the complaint is submitted within one year of the product's release date. If Topps does not have exactly the same card available in stock, they can instead offer an equivalent replacement card.
2. Panini
Panini handles complaints primarily through its own online system. They are known for having long processing times, so a good deal of patience may be required.
Their complaint policy applies to cards assessed as being factory damaged.
This is how the process works:
- Log in to the Panini website or the Panini America app
- Create a new case, a so-called Ticket
- Select the category Factory Damaged
- Submit the card along with the receipt and information from the box
It is good to know that Panini rarely replaces regular base cards. In most cases, it is primarily numbered cards, autograph cards, or memorabilia cards that are prioritized in complaint cases.
3. Upper Deck
Upper Deck generally has a good reputation when it comes to helping collectors, but they also have clear requirements for documentation.
They usually replace cards that are damaged immediately upon opening, provided that the product was purchased from an authorized retailer, a so-called Certified Diamond Dealer. We at Cardland are not a CDD at this time, but our hope is to be approved for this in the future. At the same time, it is important to mention that Upper Deck will most likely still help, and they have done so on previous occasions.
This is what you need to submit:
- A clear image or description of the damage
- Receipt
- UPC code and control number from the box
Contact Upper Deck by emailing the information to techsupport@upperdeck.com.
In most cases, the case needs to be submitted within one year of the product's release date. If the card is sold out, Upper Deck can instead offer a similar card, for example of a player of equivalent level, or sometimes a pack of cards as compensation.
4. Sportzoo
Sportzoo is a well-known player on the European market, especially in hockey and football. Their complaint process is often more personal than that of the large American manufacturers, but at the same time, they are thorough in their assessment.
They normally replace cards with clear printing errors or mechanical damage that occurred during production.
This is how the complaint works:
- Contact Sportzoo via their official complaint form or by email
- Attach clear pictures of the front and back of the card
- Include proof of purchase
Sportzoo is often faster to respond than several of the American manufacturers, but they normally require you to be able to show that the damage did not occur after the package was opened.
Important to keep in mind
Regardless of the manufacturer, it is always an advantage to:
- keep the receipt
- keep the packaging or box
- take clear pictures immediately when you discover the damage
- file the complaint as soon as possible
The better documentation you have, the greater the chance that your case will be handled smoothly.
